NOTES in the MARGIN
Gillian Anderson
It's been a big couple of weeks. We've launched WANT - a literary project that's been in development for nearly two years; and G Ode - an idea that has been on my mind for almost as long as I can remember.
And if that's not enough, I'm now (as in right here, right now) soft launching Notes In The Margin. It's a feature we want to build within G Ode that will give you a space to document and–if you're so minded–share your reflections, scribbled notes and personal thoughts on the things you read and see there.
Initially, we'll feature exactly those things curated from selected friends and community members. To start… well, it's me. And I'm sharing some of my own reflections on everything that all this–and your responses to it–has thrown up for me.
How have the last two weeks made you feel?
Incredibly invigorated. I did not anticipate I would love doing the press around WANT so much. I have had incredible conversations with women journalists that have moved and inspired me.
What’s been the most memorable moment?
Aside from the response at the Southbank event–which was so uplifting and positive that I wish we could have gone on for at least another hour–it was the first moment I could properly celebrate with all the incredible women involved in launching the book. So it was a really festive, joyous moment.
What’s been the scariest moment?
I always get scared before I do press. The first couple of interviews are terrifying as you're figuring out how to speak about something without knowing how it's going to land and you're focussed on getting all the facts right.
What can’t you wait for?
I'm excited for the US launch. So much of the attention for the book so far has been within the UK but I am so curious to see what American women make of it and to start more of those conversations. Not that it's another planet… but it kind of is.
And then of course there is the rest of the planet! I hope the enthusiasm is contagious.
What is one thing you’d encourage anyone reading this to do, today?
Spend two minutes writing down what makes you feel a sense of personal power. Give yourself over to thinking about it and see if you can embody that even just for a few minutes. Then maybe set aside time to try that again tomorrow. Could it become a habit.
What have you learned (about yourself) in the process of creating WANT?
That I can do this. To begin with, it felt foreign and daunting and scary–a bit like the idea of jumping off a cliff. But with the right support, guidance and WOMEN, we all put one foot in front of the other (the way it always is!) and here we are.
